Funny Label Fridays: A Little Jar of… Brown Stuff

November 5, 2010

No journey through the landscape of British food would be complete without a mention of this sticky little jar.

Marmite is yeast extract, a by-product of brewing beer, and has the look and consistency of tar or molasses. It’s hard to explain what it tastes like – kind of bitter, salty and savory. The first time I tried it (spread on a piece of bread with some butter), I spit it out. Then, almost inexplicably, I ate the rest of my bread, but I can’t really say I was enjoying myself.

Two or three days later, I had a sudden craving for it, and now I put it on all kinds of things: bread, crumpets, sloppy joes.

It’s a drug.

Of course, it’s featured today because it also has a cute little poem on the back:

Can’t argue with that.
